Sports-obsessed David Kenney is best known as an ace carpenter on Paul LaFrance’s team. But there’s more to him than skills with a hammer and saw. Read on to discover everything you never knew about this in-demand deck contractor, like his passion for pizza and clowning around.
1. What was your first job?
Tee ball umpire (I love all things sports)
2. What’s your dream vacation?
Anywhere with sand and water. I love building sand castles with my kiddos.
“I can change diapers like a ninja.”
3. What are your favourite pizza toppings?
Maple bacon, pepperoni and pineapple!!!!! It’s important to note my love for pizza. Mmmmmm I think I’m going to order one now.
4. What’s your hidden talent?
I was pretty much a clown for a summer at a kids camp, so I can juggle and make balloon animals. Also, I can change diapers like a ninja.
5.What’s a movie you can watch over and over again?
“Anchorman,” “I Love You Man,” “Rounders,” “Ace Ventura Pet Detective”… the list goes on and on. I love movies.
6. What’s your go-to karaoke song?
“I want it that way” by the Backstreet Boys. I usually drag up my friends so we can crush out some killer harmonies. (It’s also important to note that I can’t sing at all.)
7. What’s your favourite ’90s jam/band or artist?
Our Lady Peace, and I still love their music. We got to build a deck for their drummer, Jeremy Taggert, on Disaster Decks. It is one of my favorite episodes.
8. Sweet or salty?
Sweet but who can say no to salted caramel or candied bacon. Mmmmmm I better order dessert with that pizza
9. How did you feel the first day of your first time shooting for HGTV Canada?
I was excited and terrified. The camera guy (Dave Bradshaw) asked me to explain what I was doing and why. So naturally I did, which was quickly followed by the director (Mike Sheerin) saying, “Who the hell said you’re allowed to talk?” I nearly crapped myself, only to find out he was joking and we have been great friends ever since.
10. If you could have any other career, what would you do?
Other than a professional athlete, I would love to teach in high school. It’s a key point in teenagers development and I would love to be able to help them through it.
11. What’s your favourite holiday?
Christmas, the food, the presents, and the food. Mmmmmm I just really love eating.
12. What’s your favourite season and why?
Summer. I love going to the park with my wife and kids because I get to play on the playground again and people can’t judge because “I’m just watching my kids.”
